If there’s one thing the internet ought to be good for is bringing together people with a desperately narrow interest who would never have met each other without it.
So, in that spirit, I’m going to try to gather the Fake Seed-heads out there into a kind of informal network.
Have you ever:
- Worked on an Agricultural Development project that distributed seeds that didn’t germinate?
- Gotten burned buying seeds that were labeled hybrids but didn’t seem to be genetically uniform?
- Spend big bucks on fertilizer that didn’t seem to help plants grow at all?
- Learn of unscrupulous traders in your area adulterating agro-chemicals or dying seeds?

You got a mention on Prof Blattman’s blog. For the benefit your devoted readership on this subject of fake seed I have taken the above link from his blog.
I regret I don’t qualify for membership of your network. This is definitely a good thing for your network but I wish you well. A campaign should include recommended prison sentences for fake seed scoundrels. 10 years per fake seed is about right. In Simbabwe, where there was a massive stock theft problem, the government introduced minimum sentencing of about 15 years. As cases appear in the press, from time to time, with the appropriate sentences awarded, people express their approval. Something similar should be part of the fake seed network campaign.
